Virtual Chemistry Lab for Class 12: Practise Every CBSE Practical Online
Virtual Chemistry Lab for Class 12: Practise Every CBSE Practical Online
A virtual chemistry lab for Class 12 lets you rehearse the CBSE practical syllabus, from KMnO4 titration to salt analysis and reaction kinetics, in a browser before you touch real glassware. It cannot replace the bench for the 30-mark practical exam, but it fixes the part most students actually lose marks on: walking in without knowing what each step is for.
This guide covers what the Class 12 chemistry practical exam tests, which experiments a virtual lab handles well, where it does not help at all, and which free, government-backed options to use. It also says plainly where VidyaXR fits today and where it does not yet.
What the Class 12 Chemistry Practical Exam Actually Tests
CBSE's Chemistry curriculum (subject code 043) for 2026-27 gives the practical component 30 marks, split like this:
| Component | Marks |
|---|---|
| Volumetric analysis | 8 |
| Salt analysis | 8 |
| Content-based experiment | 6 |
| Project work | 4 |
| Class record and viva | 4 |
| Total | 30 |
Sixteen of those thirty marks sit in two experiments, titration and salt analysis, that reward procedure and reasoning as much as hand skill. That is exactly where a virtual lab earns its keep.
Fact check: The CBSE Class XI-XII Chemistry curriculum for 2026-27 allots 30 marks to practicals: Volumetric Analysis 8, Salt Analysis 8, Content Based Experiment 6, Project Work 4, Class record and viva 4. The practical syllabus runs from Surface Chemistry (section A) through Qualitative Analysis (section K). Source: CBSE, Chemistry Curriculum Classes XI-XII 2026-27 (2026)
The Practical Syllabus, Section by Section
The curriculum lists eleven sections. The table below shows what you do in each and how much a virtual chemistry lab helps.
| Section | What you do at the bench | How a virtual lab helps |
|---|---|---|
| A. Surface chemistry | Prepare lyophilic and lyophobic sols, dialysis, emulsions | Watch colloid formation at particle scale; see why starch and ferric hydroxide behave differently |
| B. Chemical kinetics | Sodium thiosulphate and HCl at different concentrations and temperatures; iodine clock | Run the reaction twenty times in two minutes and plot rate against concentration without a stopwatch |
| C. Thermochemistry | Enthalpy of dissolution or neutralisation | Rehearse the calculation and the calorimeter setup |
| D. Electrochemistry | Cell potential of Zn/Zn2+ | |
| E. Chromatography | Separate leaf pigments or two cations, find Rf values | Practise measuring Rf; understand why spots separate |
| F and G. Preparations | Potash alum, ferrous ammonium sulphate, acetanilide or aniline yellow | Learn the sequence and the reason for each step |
| H. Functional group tests | Unsaturation, alcohol, phenol, aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acid, primary amine | Memorise reagent, observation and inference pairs |
| I. Food tests | Carbohydrates, fats, proteins in pure samples and foodstuffs | Same: reagent to observation to inference |
| J. Volumetric analysis | KMnO4 against oxalic acid or ferrous ammonium sulphate | Rehearse the full titration flow, end-point logic and molarity calculation |
| K. Salt analysis | One anion and one cation from the listed set | Drill the group separation logic until it is automatic |
The common thread: a virtual lab is strongest wherever the challenge is sequence, reasoning and calculation. It is weakest wherever the challenge is your hands.
Where a Virtual Chemistry Lab Does Not Help
Be honest with yourself about this before you rely on one.
- Weighing and making standard solutions. The syllabus says students must prepare standard solutions by weighing themselves. No simulation teaches you to tare a balance or transfer a solid without loss.
- Pipette and burette technique. Reading a meniscus at eye level, controlling a drop-by-drop end point, rinsing correctly. These are motor skills.
- Judging colour and texture. The faint persistent pink of a KMnO4 end point, the exact shade of a precipitate, the smell of ammonia or hydrogen sulphide in salt analysis. Screens flatten all of this.
- The viva. Four marks come from the examiner asking you why. A virtual lab helps you build the answer, but you still have to say it out loud under pressure.
The sensible plan is to use the virtual lab to learn the procedure and the chemistry, then spend your limited bench time on technique instead of on figuring out what comes next.
How VidyaXR Fits, and Where It Does Not Yet
VidyaXR is a browser-based 3D learning platform for Indian school science, aligned to NCERT and CBSE.
- Today it covers Classes 9 and 10 chemistry in 3D: structure of the atom, the periodic table, acids, bases and salts, and the Class 10 chemistry practicals. See the guides to 3D chemistry experiments and Class 10 chemistry practicals in 3D.
- Class 12 practicals are not on the platform yet. Senior secondary content is planned, but if you need titration or salt analysis rehearsal this term, use OLabs and the NCERT manual above.
- Where it helps a Class 12 student now: shoring up the Class 9 and 10 foundations that senior chemistry assumes, such as periodic trends and ionic versus covalent bonding, in any browser on a phone or laptop, with no headset. For organic mechanisms there is a separate guide to 3D organic chemistry reaction mechanisms.
Free Virtual Lab Options for Class 12 Chemistry
Three government-backed resources cover most of the syllabus at no cost.
OLabs (Online Labs), built by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and CDAC Mumbai with funding from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has a dedicated Class 12 chemistry section. Its simulations include preparation of lyophilic and lyophobic sols, the sodium thiosulphate and HCl kinetics study, the iodide and hydrogen peroxide reaction, paper chromatography, determination of EMF of a cell, tests for functional groups, qualitative analysis of carbohydrates, proteins, oils and fats, and determination of the concentration of KMnO4 solution. That maps onto sections A, B, D, E, H, I and J directly. Find it at olabs.edu.in under Chemistry, Class 12.
NCERT's Class XII Chemistry Laboratory Manual is free as PDFs on the NCERT science laboratory manuals page. It has eleven units, from Colloids to Tests for Carbohydrates, Fats and Proteins, plus a Projects chapter. Read the unit before you open the simulation and the simulation will make far more sense.
PhET from the University of Colorado has browser-based chemistry simulations on molarity, concentration, pH, reactions and rates. They are concept tools rather than practical rehearsals, but they are excellent for the "why" behind kinetics and volumetric analysis.
DIKSHA adds NCERT-aligned video explanations you can reach from the QR codes in your textbook.
A Two-Week Routine Before the Practical Exam
- Days 1 to 3: read the NCERT manual unit for titration and salt analysis. Write out each procedure in your own words.
- Days 4 to 7: run each procedure in a virtual lab until you can predict the next step and the expected observation before clicking.
- Days 8 to 10: redo the molarity and Rf calculations by hand from numbers you generated in the simulation.
- Days 11 to 13: bench time only. Burette control, meniscus reading, end-point colour, precipitate handling.
- Day 14: viva practice. Have a friend ask "why" after every step.
Students who follow this order usually find the bench sessions calm instead of frantic, because the thinking was done earlier.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a virtual chemistry lab for Class 12?
It is a browser-based simulation of the CBSE Class 12 practical syllabus: titration, salt analysis, kinetics, thermochemistry, electrochemistry, chromatography and the organic and food tests. You perform the steps on screen and see the expected observations.
Is there a free virtual chemistry lab for Class 12?
Yes. OLabs, funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, offers Class 12 chemistry simulations free of charge, and NCERT's Class XII Chemistry Laboratory Manual is a free download.
Can a virtual lab replace the real practical exam?
No. The exam is conducted at the bench and 30 marks depend on it. A virtual lab prepares you for the procedure, the reasoning and the calculations, so your bench time goes into technique.
Does VidyaXR have Class 12 chemistry practicals?
Not yet. VidyaXR currently covers NCERT Class 9 and 10 chemistry in 3D, with senior secondary content planned. For Class 12 practical rehearsal today, use OLabs and the NCERT manual.
Which Class 12 experiments benefit most from a virtual lab?
Salt analysis and volumetric analysis, which together carry 16 of the 30 practical marks and depend heavily on knowing the sequence and the logic. Kinetics also benefits, because you can repeat trials quickly and plot the data.
Conclusion
A virtual chemistry lab for Class 12 is a rehearsal room, not a replacement bench. Use it to make titration, salt analysis and kinetics automatic in your head, so the few hours you get with real apparatus go into the skills a screen cannot teach. OLabs and the NCERT manual cover the syllabus for free, and VidyaXR will add senior secondary chemistry when it is ready to do it properly.
